ICJB

The International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal (ICJB) is a coalition of organisations, non-profit groups and individuals led by five Bhopal survivor organisations working in close alliance with others.

AIM

Our aim is to achieve justice and a life of dignity for the survivors of the Union Carbide Disaster in Bhopal, which includes all affected by the gas leak of 1984 and the subsequent soil and water contamination and children who are born damaged as a result of their parents’ exposure. Beyond this we seeks to help, support and share knowledge and resources with communities all over the world that are similarly impacted by chemical contamination and irresponsible development.

The ICJB brings pressure on Union Carbide and its owner the Dow Chemical Company and the US and Indian governments to ensure adequate healthcare, a safe environment and proper rehabilitation for the survivors of the disaster and their children. Exemplary punishment of the Corporation and guilty officials is one of our key demands, in order to set a precedent and strong deterrent to other multinational-corporations, their executives and supporters in government.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

1. The Precautionary Principle.

When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, it must be avoided unless the proponent can prove that it is not harmful.

2. The Polluter Pays Principle.

Those who pollute the environment and endangering people’s health are responsible for cleaning up the pollution and remedying the ill-health they cause.

3. The Right to Know.

People should have easy access to information about potential or current threats to the quality of the environment and their lives.

4. International Liability.

CEOs and Corporations should not be allowed to abscond from legal proceedings brought against them in other nations.

5. Environmental Justice.

Poor, indigenous communities should not be targeted with polluting facilities, dangerous technologies and other threats to their health and community.
