The victims

Many among the marchers have lost family members – both parents, children, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands, near relatives, friends and neighbours.

Many are ill from diseases of the lung, brain, reproductive system, psyche. Some have had children with birth defects born in their families. Below are some representative cases.

1. Orphaned by Union Carbide's poison gases

The young people below were orphaned by the gas clouds of "that night", 2-3 December 1984. They have formed an organisation, Bhopal ki Aawaaz (the Voice of Bhopal). Shahid Noor is their spokesperson, he was due to come on the padyatra, but was prevented by being hospitalised by illness. His stories, those of his wife Firdaus, also an orphan, and the others are given below.

2. Damaged by drinking water poisoned by Carbide's chemicals

The children below are from families who live in areas whose wells have been poisoned by the chemicals abandoned in Union Carbide's factory in Bhopal. The chemicals include substances known to cause cancers and birth-defects. See here for a summary of the toxins involved. All the children were photographed at the Sambhavna Clinic in Bhopal, where they and their families receive free treatment.
